Final Exertion Idea

Previously we came up with good concepts and had attempted to implement those ideas. However, due to certain restrictions and limitations, we had to ditch the idea and whip up something new. Please allow me to introduce:

Mr. B *Applaud*
(this a temporary name)


Don't be alarmed! This is only his initial growth stage, but by Thursday, Mr. B will blossom into something beautiful~

On 19th of May, Team Nymphora went to shop for Mr. B's parts and gathered at Justin's place to create him.



FAQ
1. What is Mr. B capable of you ask?
Mr. B is very kind, patient and tolerant. He’ll allow you to kick and punch him without any retaliation. Mr. B is so kind that he’ll reward you for your physical efforts.

2. So what’s the concept about?
Punch or Kick Mr. B repetitively and he will magically reward your efforts with a rise of a flag. Reach the flag to a certain point and the lights will be lit.

3. I wanna know the technical nerdy stuff.
So far we got:
Motor that connects to USB
Some Buttons
Some wires

4. What’s the game about?
The game will be announced in the website dedicated to Mr. B (coming soon).

How it works:
One member of each team will jump on the mini trampoline and try and hit the target as much as possible to push their score in front of the opposing team enough to win.

Second player, ball and funny hat:
The player hitting the target wears the hat, the second player starts with the ball then passes it to the hitter who can then throw it at the opposing hitter to try to knock of their hat, if it is knocked off the player has to stop hitting till they have retrieved there hat and it is back onto their head this giving them a time penalty . the second player can then go get the ball and repeat this process as fast as they like. players cannot hold onto their hats.

Throughout the game players can switch rolls with their team member, strategy is to work out when and if it is worth losing time in swapping to gain a maybe less tired hitter.

PYJAMMA SLEEP OVER! GREAT SUCCESS!


So today, our group had a bonding session, pyjamas, pillowcases, sleeping bags were brought over to a single house. In that house we played truth or dare, 20 questions, nintendo wii, deep and meaningful conversations and even cooking! Oh god you should've been there...

In other news we also tried to give our ideas 'substance' some sense of 'form' we brought them kicking and screaming into the harsh reality of life! Patricks baby was born first as you can see he's a tad bit red and was immediately punched as soon as it came out:

FALCON PUNCH!

It was made using a rebounding punching bag (weighted by water), a simple microphone headset and a computer, costing a wonderful 0 pesos! We speculated, that the score can be measured via the amount of sound is generated, using this handy program:

What did we learn kids? As a group we discovered the game was indeed fun, and of course it fit the flexible criteria that was set in stone by Floyd. We discussed a scoring system as well:

Score will be multiplayed depending on the 'equipment' used to hit:
x 1 Fists (Easy)
x 4 for Nerf Bat (Hard)
It's easier to produce sound with your fist, than a nerf bat. Make sense no?


The second child was Justin's tactical GPS game, which caused our engineers some great stress:

Thankfully we had an epiphany! And hobbled up a finely engineered prototype model:

Again the budget was a jaw dropping 0 rupees! It was made with a pre-existing notebook, skype, a headband, sticky tape and the internet! Basically the runner is 'rigged' with the webcam+headband also known as the 'headcam' whilst the controller is 'rigged' with a desktop computer. Communication? It's farily simple, we used the in built skype instant messanger to send the messages to the controller and runner.



But sir! There are limitations though, the runner is feeling 'exertion' but the controller isn't. Then there's also the cumbersome 'headcam' the runner has to constantly look at the skype program to see the images. On the other hand it's really entertaining for the audience, seeing a person with a huge bulky rig walking around the city doing odd things, the idea got us all kicking and screaming like school girls. Anyways must dash, Lady Gaga is playing my song!

Fully implemented exertion game :]

This idea is inspired by some Jap game show i watched ages ago.

Hope you guys comprehended my stuffed up explanation :/


The goggle will fundamentally cause the same effect as spinning around at the same spot then force to walk.
Bouncing Rubber Ball and walking/running simultaneously during dizzy status will make the players look like a retard.. and that's what is funny :=D

The players will be compelled to run because the shorter time they spend in the game, the more point they get. Also, they will be compelled to concentrate on their balance because the less steps they make, the more points they obtain. So.. they will be either shaking like a roly-poly or tripping like crazy.

Unlike my previous idea, this can be implemented from anywhere.

The essential materials, Pedometer, Timer, Goggle and Rubber ball are very easy to get.(i believe so lol.)



This game has included certain aspects of typical exertion game:
- Significantly depends on physical activity (requires intensive physical effort)
- Relatively long playing time (can set the time as long as you wish)
- Includes acceleration process (fosters exhaustion)
- Cooperative & Capability to compete (provides motivation)

This game has fulfilled certain tasks given during the lecture:
- Games that require intense physical effort from its players. (Y)
- Fully implemented game. (Y)
- Employ practical method. (Y)
- Games that does not involve screen. (Y)
- Get your audience excited. (Y)

HOT LAVA FROM BIRDS BEES AND BUTTERFLIES?


You probably know who this is, so I'll spare the pleasantries, so I'm currently running on some 'medicine' and also often write down stupid things down in my luxurious moleskine journal (e.g. 'K.i.s.s, songs in the minor key of E',). So pardon the spontaneity of this idea. I just woke up from this dream, it was a dream of nostalgia. I still remember vividly, playing the game commonly known as the 'floor is lava'. As a six year old the sense of dread as the 'imaginary lava' began to slowly rise, eventually engulfing St. Timothy Primary school playground, was very real to me. Now for those of you, that lacked a childhood or prefer to ignore it entirely (parents dressed you up as the opposite sex? Call me sometime we can talk), the name explains it, just like how Snakes on a Plane explains the entire premise of said film.

The dream (or memory?) had this very nostalgic vibe to it. I think we need to find away to establish a sense of nostalgia into our exertion games, since currently it's the flavor of the past four years (everyone is back into mario, nintendo etc.). Implementation?

Hmm well I'm picturing, 4 pedestals (prolly different heights and sizes min 10 cms, max 30? so they have to exert effort into getting up on them). Now the floor will and the pedestals surface will change colours e.g. RED=YOU CANNOT STEP ON THE, BLUE=YOU CAN, PURPLE=ITS A BOUT TO CHANGE STILL STEPPABLE TILL IT CHANGES. The game type would be last man standing, so whoever avoids the 'lava' the longest will win. Players can have numerous tactics:
-They can wait for the 'floor' to change into purple so they don't need to exert effort into jumping to the next pedestal, but will still need to exert effort into 'climbing it'
-Or can just stay on the pedestal, not touching the floor at all and just jump from pedestal to pedestal.
-Or can risk staying in the floor, and climbing onto a pedestal when needed
*however the pedestals might be 'loaded' with players thus being eliminated

Now regarding the colors:
Pedestal will have
RED, BLUE, PURPLE (random intervals, time duration to change color slowly increases, as the game progresses)
Floor will have
Red, Purple (again random intervals, the floor will never be safe essentially, thus there's a risk factor in staying on the floor and only going on the pedestal when needed)

MUSIC! I was thinking some, light house music? If you play peggle, the soundtrack is subtle, but it delights your ears it gets you into the groove of maxing colored gems and then laughing at your colorblind friend mixing green with yellow.

It needs some spit polish, and probably some thinking that wasn't induced by sleep depravity. I'm not sure if the 'Floor is lava' was a gen Y, X exclusive game, I'm not even sure if kids these days play it anymore, but remembering that game, made me remember so many things about primary school, getting caught playing spin the bottle, installing WC2 on the student pcs, getting pokemon cards banned, having the swings to yourself all those rose tintend memories makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. The sense of yearning for the past...

Think back to the time when you were a little lass and bass, what games did you make up? I'm sure I'm not the only that played 'step on only this colored tile' in shopping centers or 'don't step on the crack' game. Now if you excuse me I have a hot date with Mr and Mrs Sandman

Tactical Exertion Game by Justin Gan

I will currently name this project the "Tactical Exertion Game" for lack of a better name currently. This game will be in teams of 2 and the maximum amount of teams that could be playing at any one time shall be 2-3.

I'll let the images do the talking for now, and I'll explain in more detail at the end.















Parts that need explaining :

How would we be able to track players?

There are several ways we can do this, the controller will first have to exert force to press a button which would send a message containing, L, R, U, D which stand for Left, Right, Up and Down, and the player will receive this on his or her phone.

Tracking of players can be done by using Iphone Friend Tracker Apps, but I am considering this idea to be invalid now, because it will utilise a screen.

Another way of doing this would be through the use of a walkie talkie. Since walkie talkies will already have different frequencies available, each team would be able to have their private channel. The controller, activating the button will play a recorded sound of L, R, U and D, and the runner will hear it on his/her walkie-talkie. Tracking through this method might require an additional person acting as a tracker? Will need to consult Floyd lol.

Will there be more interesting ways of playing this?

Most definitely, with the inclusion of human "NPCS" that give out hints strategically positioned inside the building, the controller can choose to either go for the hints first or hunt for the item based on the first clue.

Furthermore, a controller may choose to get a hint simply to block other teams from getting team, as once a hint is given out, other teams will not be able to get them from that 'NPC".

So it seems we have a numerous amount of vigilant, video game voyeurs viewing our blog (fuck yeah alliteration!). Anyways, I assume all of you guys know how much I want us to go to several locations to test and interview people that play exertion-esque games. You know, record their commentary, gauge their response (redundancy!), post pictures, you know? Give substance to this fancy blog of ours.

Great round of team discussion,in my opinion I prefer meeting face to face, since we can immediately gauge each others reactions. Advance Frisbee? by Ann

Hay guys!
So I’ve been brainstorming and starring at my frisbee which lead to an idea/suggestion.
This is rough idea though! Only a small idea for the sake of expanding another BETTER idea! =)

So this exertion game consists of:
1x Frisbee
Even number of players with a minimum of 4 but ideally 6+
A sensor device to measure time, accuracy, and distance

Objective:
The objective in winning is to score more points than the other team.

Scoring system:
Scores are being measured through accuracy, distance and the time it takes to score a goal.
Scores can be achieved during the game play even if there hasn’t been a goal yet. It is calculated by throwing distance or countering (other team stealing the flying Frisbee)

Set up:
So here is what the set up would be like:



As for the goal area: There are 3 different scores depending on where the Frisbee travels through.

Game play and rules:
As you can see, the Frisbee starts in the middle, the game begins when it is thrown up into the air and whoever catches that gets to past that onto their teammates.

Player holding a Frisbee must not take more than 3 steps; Frisbee must be passed on before or on the 3rd step.
Penalty for breaking this rule would result in Frisbee being given to the other team.

Ok so accuracy score only relates to goal scoring and distance score applies to every passed on Frisbee. Score is reduced for every second of time passes by.

Countering score is given to the opposing team if they steal the Frisbee. The countering score is able to reduce the amount of time in the game play by half which would help with the scoring.

e.g. Team 1 with frisbee had it for 20 seconds(reduced score), Team 2 steals it and the time continues to tick from 10 seconds(instead of 20) and on top of that, they get a set counter score.

Counter and re-countering would reduce more time. This was implemented to encourage more competitiveness and participation of players besides the main objective which is to score through a goal.

To conlcude, this game can get pretty intense since there's lots of running involved and awareness is needed as well as trying to being accurate with a frisbee. This game might appeal to those who are lazy to exercise since it can be quite enjoyable and competitive. Being outdoor gives you vitamin D too! =P

Anyway this is a very rough idea that somehow came into my head. Sorry if it’s poorly structured!! Had to blab on it before bedtime.

EXERTION GAME by. Patrick Kim

To begin with, exertion game is known as an innovative gaming method that requires intensive physical activity from its players. Its motif is focused on developing games that can actually be beneficial in our real lives unlike conventional video game that causes numerous health problems in the long run. There are existing exertion games out there such as Jogging over a distance, Table tennis for three, Push and Pull, Breakout for two and Shadow boxing in a distance and fortunately, they were successful in gathering peoples interests.

First of all, for the current project, we have been given specific tasks that are

- Games that require intense physical effort from its players.

- Fully implemented game.

- Employ practical method.

- Games that does not involve screen.

- Get your audience excited.


In top down order, these points indicates that we must consider about intensity & length of the game, mobility of the game, practicality of the game, screen-less game and visual impact of the game. Although I wasnt capable of coming up with perfect exertion game which involves all the tasks, I was able to generate a game that can visually and physically appeal to audiences. The image below contains details of my exertion games and the method I employed.




The game is simple structured. You can think it as typical sparring except, your opponent is motionless.
You can either use punch, kick or both and there are three different modes for it.

You can set the mode by simply pressing button underneath the model’s foot. You can also set the time and the minimum time you can select is 30 seconds. There are three different scoring for the game that are ‘Critical blow’, ‘Paralysing blow’ and ‘Normal blow’. Critical blow is done when the model’s vital points are hit. Paralysing blow is done when the model’s skelental joints are hit. Normal blow is done from hitting anywhere except critical and paralysing blow points. these three distinguishing points determine who will be the winner. There are two different scoreing systems that can be choosen before the game starts.











When kicking mode is selected,
the player can kick the model any-
where he wants.



When punching mode is selected,
only the impacts applied on upper body
(from thommy to head) will be recognised
by the computer.

The sample image shows boxing pose,
yet, you can choose to use your own
punching method.




Two of more players can compete each other.



When the game is finished players have to give warm embrace to the model :D
